Smallpox Update
In December 2002 Michigan began vaccinating core teams of public health workers and hospital workers against smallpox disease. The goal was to develop smallpox response teams that could quickly initiate smallpox vaccination for the entire population and provide care for smallpox victims. At this time, the Michigan Department of Community Health has indicated that there are enough public health and hospital workers vaccinated to effectively respond to a smallpox outbreak. Due to the potential complications from the smallpox vaccine, the decision was made to halt further vaccination efforts for emergency response workers or the general public. For more information about smallpox disease and smallpox vaccination (go to www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/smallpox/overview/disease-facts.asp
