Tattoo/Body Art Program

Tattoo/Body Art Program

Michigan law requires tattoo and body art providers to be licensed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The law aims to reduce the spread of diseases such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. These viruses can be dangerous. They can make you sick and they can possibly make your family sick if they are exposed. Some of these diseases are permanent and can be fatal. Keeping a clean shop and using safe work practices, ensures a safe and professional atmosphere for artists and clients.

The Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department has the responsibility of conducting a plan review of body art facilities PRIOR to licensure and of inspecting body art facilities within Benzie and Leelanau Counties.

The Michigan Body Art Code requires the following:

  • Licenses for establishments
  • Sanitation guidelines and requirements for proper post-piercing and tattoo care
  • Technician completion of a course with the OSHA required content on bloodborne pathogens
  • The Hepatitis B vaccination series be offered to all technicians employed by the body art establishment
