Campground Program

Campground Program

A license from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is required to operate a campground offering five or more campsites/recreational units in the State of Michigan.

In addition to licensing campgrounds, the Environmental Health program is also responsible for inspecting each licensed campground, at least once per year, and investigating reported campground sanitation complaints.

Construction & Remodeling

Construction plans for a new or remodeled campground are reviewed by EGLE to make sure they comply with regulations. A campground construction permit application is needed before construction can start and an inspection is required before the or new or remodeled portion of the campground can be used.

Temporary Campground

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) now requires all Temporary Campground License applications to be submitted through Michigan Environmental Health and Drinking Water Information System (MiEHDWIS), the State's online permitting and licensing system. Paper applications are no longer accepted.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the EGLE Temporary Campground webpage.
  2. Create a MiEHDWIS account if you do not already have one.
  3. Complete and submit your Temporary Campground License application through MiEHDWIS. You will need:
    • Copies of contracts for servicers to be provided (probable privies, garbage, potable water, etc.).
    • A site plan showing the location and accessibility of the campsites, campground roads, and facilities.
  4. Pay the State licensing fee through MiEHDWIS as part of the application process.

Visit the EGLE Temporary Campground webpage to access MiEHDWIS, review application requirements, and begin the application process.

Local Inspection Fee Required

Please note that MiEHDWIS only collects the State licensing fee. Applicants are also required to pay the local health department inspection fee before a Temporary Campground inspection can be scheduled and conducted. After submitting your application through MiEHDWIS, contact our office to arrange payment of the local inspection fee. (BLDHD Fee Schedule)

Submit temporary campground license applications and pay the EGLE fee through MiEHDWIS at least 14 days before the event start date. The local health department fee must also be paid at least 14 days before the event.
