Maternal and Infant Health Program

  • A multi-disciplinary team comprised of a nurse, social worker, and registered dietician promotes healthy pregnancies and a healthy first year of life through home and office visits.
  • WIC and immunizations services can also be received through this program.

Reproductive Health Clinics

  • Reproductive health services include pap smears, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, distribution of contraceptives, preconception care, basic infertility evaluation, and health counseling.
  • Insured or Uninsured.  If no insurance or high deductibles and co-pays our services are provided at low cost on a sliding fee scale.  Contributions are appreciated.
  • FREE Breast and cervical cancer screening and education for women 40 years and over who are uninsured or have unaffordable deductibles/copays.  Screening includes a clinical pelvic exam, PAP test, screening mammogram, counseling, and referral.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Screening

  • Prevention and control of communicable diseases are coordinated through surveillance, access to treatment, and education.
  • Comprehensive and confidential services are provided by a nurse practitioner to diagnose and treat sexually transmitted diseases.
  • STD screening, diagnosis, and treatment provided free or at low cost.

HIV Testing & Counseling

  • FREE rapid HIV testing - results in 20 minutes
  • Certified counselors provide confidential and anonymous counseling and testing for HIV.

TB (Tuberculosis) Testing

  • TB testing and follow-up are available to the public for $20.

Hearing and Vision Screening

  • The health department employs certified technicians to provide hearing and vision screening and follow-up services.
  • Hearing screening is offered to all public school students in kindergarten, second, fourth, and sixth grades.  Vision screening is offered to all public school students in first, third, fifth, and seventh grades.  To receive a hearing or vision screening for a student in school, please contact your school principal.

  • If you have a preschooler ages 3-5 years in need of hearing or vision screening, contact Ruth Griner at 231-882-2107 to arrange a hearing or vision screening appointment.


Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program

  • Nutrition counseling, assessment of growth and development, and supplemental food benefits are provided to families with pregnant and postpartum women, infants, and children up to age five.  Registered nurses and a registered dietician provide teaching and counseling to families. WIC peer counselors give basic breastfeeding information and support to expecting and new mothers.

Breastfeeding Resources



  • Immunizations available for infants through senior adults
  • The Health Department is able to bill most health insurance plans
  • Free vaccine available for children through 18 years of age, who are uninsured or do not have coverage for vaccines
  • Adults may also be eligible for free vaccine, depending on insurance status and health needs

Children's Special Health Care Services

  • CSHCS is a program for children and some adults with special health care needs and their families.
  • Coverage and referral for specialty services based on the person's health problems. 
  • Family-centered services to support you in your role as the primary caretaker of your child. 
  • Community-based services to help you care for your child at home and maintain normal routines
  • Culturally competent services which demonstrate awareness of cultural differences
  • Coordinated services to pull together the services of many different providers who work within different agencies.
